Why Is Only Half of My Outlet Working?

Serving our neighbors in Sacramento and Placer County and surrounding areas

You go to plug something in and realize only one half of your outlet works. No sparks, no sound, no power. Just a dead socket on one side.

It’s frustrating, and maybe even a little concerning.

At Maverick Electric, we get tons of calls from Sacramento homeowners about this exact issue. The good news? In many cases, it’s not a serious electrical problem – but it’s something you should understand and address sooner rather than later.

Here’s a look at the most common reasons only half of your outlet is working and what to do about it.

Reason #1: It’s a Switched Outlet (By Design)

This is by far the most common explanation.

Many homes, especially those built in the 1980s and 1990s, have outlets that are half-switched. That means one half is always powered, and the other half is controlled by a wall switch, often near the entrance to the room.

The idea was to let homeowners plug in a lamp and control it from a switch without installing overhead lighting.

    How to check:

    • Flip nearby light switches and see if the dead half of the outlet turns on.
    • If it does,  it’s working as intended.

    What to do:

    • Nothing is wrong, but if it’s inconvenient, an electrician can convert it to a fully live outlet.

Reason #2: Loose or Damaged Wiring

If neither half of the outlet responds to switches, the problem could be wiring-related. Outlets rely on secure wire connections in the back or sides. Over time, especially in older homes, these connections can loosen, break, or burn out due to heat.

This can leave one half of the outlet dead while the other still functions, especially if the two halves are wired separately.

    What to look for:

    • Signs of wear or scorch marks around the outlet
    • Cracks, discoloration, or warmth when touched

    What to do:

    • Don’t try to fix this yourself. Exposed wires can be dangerous. A licensed electrician can safely inspect and replace damaged wiring or outlets.

Reason #3: Outlet Is Part of a Daisy Chain

Many outlets are wired in sequence – what electricians call a “daisy chain.” If an upstream connection is loose or failing, it can cause partial power loss further down the line.

This setup is common in garages, basements, or older homes. Sometimes, only half the outlet loses power while the other side still functions due to how the wiring is split internally.

    What to do:

    • An electrician will need to trace the circuit and identify the point of failure. This could involve checking multiple outlets on the same breaker.

Reason #4: Worn or Faulty Outlet

Outlets can simply wear out. Internal contacts loosen, plastic degrades, and metal components corrode. If only one half of the outlet is working, the non-working side may have failed internally.

    You might also notice:

    • Plugs fall out easily
    • Power flickers when a plug is jiggled
    • Discoloration or small arcs

    What to do:

    • Replace the outlet. This is a quick job for an electrician and usually inexpensive, especially if multiple outlets are being serviced at once.

    When to Call an Electrician

If you’ve ruled out a switched outlet and still have no power on one side, it’s best not to guess. Electrical issues can be dangerous if ignored or mishandled.

At Maverick Electric, we’ll diagnose the issue, fix the outlet, and inspect your home’s wiring to ensure you’re not at risk for deeper electrical problems. Whether it’s a single outlet or signs of something bigger, we’ll handle it safely and efficiently.
